Microsoft has announced a "multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment" in OpenAI, the inventor of ChatGPT and other technologies that can produce intelligible text and generate new graphics.

The tech titan defined its new arrangement on Monday as the third step of a developing cooperation with San Francisco-based OpenAI, which began with a $1 billion investment in 2019. It did not reveal the financial amount of its most recent investment.

OpenAI's free writing tool ChatGPT was released.

On November 30, OpenAI's free writing tool ChatGPT was released, drawing public attention to the prospects of new developments in AI.

It's part of a new breed of machine-learning systems that can communicate, write legible text on demand, and make unique graphics and video based on what they've learned from a massive collection of digital books, online articles, and other material.

Microsoft's collaboration.

Microsoft's collaboration allows it to profit on OpenAI's technologies. Microsoft's supercomputers are assisting in the powering of the startup's energy-intensive AI systems, while the Redmond, Washington-based tech behemoth will be able to further incorporate OpenAI technologies into Microsoft products.
Customers who use Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform will have access to new AI tools to design and run their apps, according to a statement from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

When OpenAI first began.

When OpenAI first began in December 2015, it was intended to be a non-profit artificial intelligence research organization. The organization's declared goals were to "advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit mankind as a whole, unrestrained by a requirement to create financial return," with Tesla CEO Elon Musk serving as co-chair and among its early investors.

That changed in 2018, when it formed the for-profit Open AI LP and transferred virtually all of its employees to the company, not long after releasing the first version of the GPT model for creating human-like paragraphs of legible prose. Musk also stepped down from its board of directors in 2018.

Other OpenAI products include the image-generator DALL-E, which was introduced in 2021, the computer programming help Codex, and the speech recognition tool Whisper.

Speed AI advancements.

Microsoft stated on Monday that its expanded cooperation will assist "to speed AI advancements to guarantee these advantages are broadly shared with the rest of the world."

The investment announcement came a day before Microsoft was set to disclose profits for the October-December fiscal quarter, and after the company said last week that it planned to lay off 10,000 people.
